🚨 Kidney Failure Is on the Rise in Nigeria
Have you noticed how common kidney failure has become, even among young people and children here in Nigeria? This was not the case years ago.
While congenital abnormalities (inborn conditions) still play a role, our modern lifestyle habits are now a leading cause of kidney-related illnesses. It’s time to take this seriously.
🧠 Why Your Kidneys Matter
Your kidneys filter everything in your bloodstream. In fact, about 25% of all blood pumped by your heart goes straight to your kidneys.
When you don’t drink enough water, your blood becomes thicker, making it harder for your kidneys to filter. Over time, this can damage them.
⚠️ Products That Harm Kidney Health
Certain things we consume regularly can overload or damage the kidneys, including:
- 🧂 Spices (especially artificial and excessive use)
- 🍷 Alcoholic drinks
- 🥤 Colas and sugary drinks
- ☕ Stimulants like tea, coffee, and cigarettes
- 💊 Medications (especially without prescription or guidance)
Your kidneys have to work hard to get rid of these. Without enough water, they suffer.
💧 So, How Much Water Should You Drink Daily?
It depends on your weight and your activity level.
Here’s a simple guide:
🧍♂️ Multiply your weight (in kg) by 30–35ml to get your daily water requirement.
Example:
If you weigh 60kg:
60kg x 30ml = 1800ml
60kg x 35ml = 2100ml
So, you should drink 1.8 to 2.1 liters per day — more if you’re physically active or work under the sun.
🚫 Reminder: Soft Drinks Are Not Water
Soft drinks, alcohol, stimulants like coffee, tea, and medications do not hydrate you — they actually require water to be processed and removed from the body.
So drinking them in place of water only increases your risk.
🧪 Signs That Your Body Needs Water
Pay attention to the following:
- 🚽 Dark yellow or brown urine with a strong smell
- 😴 Headaches, fatigue, and body pain
- 👄 Dry mouth, lips, and eyes
- 👅 White patches on the tongue
- 🥵 Feeling thirsty often
- ❌ Urinating less than 4 times a day
✋ Some people brag, “I only urinate once or twice a day.” That’s not a good thing — it’s a sign of dehydration.
🚻 Don’t Hold In Your Urine
Holding urine in for too long can lead to:
- 🚫 Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- 🚫 Acute kidney injury
Remember, urine is a waste product. Let it out when your body tells you to.
👶 A Word for Parents
Please ensure your babies are breastfed for at least six months before introducing cow’s milk. This helps protect their developing kidneys and supports healthy growth.
🍺 To Our Men: Being Responsible Is Real Strength
To the young men who brag about drinking a crate of beer in one sitting:
That doesn’t make you an “odogwu” — it’s damaging your body.
Drink responsibly. Care for your health now, so you don’t regret it later.
